The D2C chatbot playbook: automate answers, not relationships

What is the short answer?

Start with the three questions your team answers daily, then automate answers — never relationships. A D2C chatbot earns its keep on order tracking, size and exchange queries, and COD doubts. Everything else can wait. Automate the repetitive, escalate the emotional.

Which channel first?

Where your customers already complain. For most Indian D2C brands that is WhatsApp, then Instagram DMs, then the website. One channel done well beats three channels half-wired. Prove containment and response time on one channel before cloning to the next.

What must the bot never do?

Never fake a human, never trap a buyer. Name it as automated, show the human handoff in one tap, and log every conversation for weekly review. The fastest way to kill trust is a bot that pretends, loops, or hides the exit. Containment without escape is a complaint factory.

How do you know it works?

Three numbers: containment rate, handoff time, and repeat-contact rate. If containment rises while repeat contacts fall, the bot resolves instead of deflecting. Review transcripts weekly for the first two months — the bot learns from your corrections, not from launch day.
