Test the name seven ways before you love it. Say it aloud, spell it over a call, search it, check domains and handles, translate-check it, shrink it to a favicon, and imagine it angry in a complaint. Names fail in predictable places — test those places first.
What kills most startup names?
Cleverness that needs explaining. Puns, missing vowels, and invented spellings cost you every introduction. A name people must spell twice is a tax on every referral. Clarity compounds; cleverness confuses.
What makes a name strong?
Short, sayable, ownable, extendable. Two syllables beat four. Real words beat invented ones unless the invention is truly distinctive. And it must stretch: from logo to domain to product names without breaking. Test the ecosystem, not just the word.
When should you rename?
Before launch, cheaply — or after proof, deliberately. Early renames cost nothing; late renames cost recognition. If customers already mispronounce or misspell it weekly, the market has voted. Listen fast, decide once.
