Agents API is live: build on your data, not plumbing
The agent harness is now a utility endpoint. What remains defensible: your data, your judgment, your distribution. Build one workflow where your corpus is the moat.

OpenAI's Agents API in public beta means agent infrastructure just became a utility. Orchestration, tool routing, context compaction — previously months of engineering — now arrives as an endpoint. Startups stop building harnesses and start building what makes their agent different: data, judgment, distribution.
What should teams build first on it?
One workflow where your data is the moat. Support triage on your tickets, research on your corpus, ops on your systems. Generic agents on generic data produce generic results anyone can copy. Your corpus plus their harness equals something defensible.
What is the pricing lesson?
Pay per token plus tools, no platform fee. Agent economics become arithmetic: cost per resolved task against human cost per task. Measure that ratio from week one. Workflows where the ratio wins get scaled; the rest get killed before they become architecture.
What should studios and agencies note?
Client work shifts from building agents to directing them. Positioning, guardrails, evaluation, taste — the human layers around a commodity harness. Sell judgment and outcomes, not plumbing. Plumbing just got a public API.
