Startup SEO when nobody clicks: the zero-click playbook

Zero-click search splits the battlefield: commercial pages earn the clicks that remain, quotable pages earn the citations. Startups should sequence bottom-funnel first, write answer-first, and measure both clicks and AI mentions.

Startup SEO when nobody clicks: the zero-click playbook

What is the short answer?

Win the queries that still click, and get cited in the ones that don't. Most informational searches now end on the results page. Startups win by splitting the battlefield: commercial and long-tail pages earn clicks, while quotable answer-first pages earn citations that compound into brand searches.

Which keywords first?

Bottom-funnel, then long-tail, then head terms — in that order. Price, comparison and alternative queries convert and face thinner competition. Long-tails build topical depth. Head terms come last, funded by revenue the first two already produced. Reverse this order and you burn a year ranking for applause.

What does a zero-click page look like?

A question heading, a direct answer in two lines, one claim per sentence. Skimmers get the point, extractors lift the quote, and the page earns the citation plus the occasional click from buyers who want depth. Every section opens with the answer, then spends the rest earning it.

How do you measure it?

Clicks plus citations, never clicks alone. Track Search Console for rankings and clicks, and a fixed ten-query panel across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews for brand mentions. Pages cited in AI answers show rising branded search within weeks — the compound interest of zero-click SEO.
